When Rocket (Bradley Cooper) is nearly killed in an ambush by the golden-skinned Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) discovers his friend has a fatal kill switch embedded by his creator, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) — the alien geneticist who tortured and mutilated Rocket as part of a twisted quest to engineer a "perfect" species. To save him, Quill reassembles the fractured Guardians, including an alternate-timeline Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) who doesn't remember loving him, for a mission that forces the whole team to reckon with where they came from and whether they can stay together.
James Gunn closes out his trilogy by finally handing Rocket the emotional weight the character has quietly carried since 2014, and it pays off: extended flashbacks to his creation and the other genetically engineered animals he grew up with are the most upsetting, tender material in any MCU film, and Bradley Cooper's voice work carries real devastation. The High Evolutionary is one of the more effective Marvel villains in years precisely because his cruelty is banal rather than theatrical — he genuinely believes he's improving the universe. Gunn balances that darkness with the found-family humor and mixtape needle-drops the trilogy is known for, and the ending gives every member of the ensemble a real send-off. It's an emotionally satisfying, occasionally brutal conclusion that critics widely called the best trilogy capper the MCU has produced.
